The Mary Eagan Garden Fund

The Mary Eagan Garden Fund was created in memory of Mary (1947-1992), who requested that any monies raised in her honor be directed towards building a patio for future patients' well-being during their times of receiving cancer treatments.

While working with local hospitals towards patio construction, a concurrent pursuit will be the universalization of the concept of having such a facility be part of an overall treatment plan for those unfortunate to be so afflicted. The Waltham (MA) Hospital embraced the goal, and on April 27th, 2001, had the opening ceremony and ribbon cuttting of the magnificent healing garden. The "Mary Eagan Garden" adjoins the brand new Cancer Care Center; providing a setting of comfort and solace for people who our hearts go out to.

Wendel Heers, Professor Emeritus and former Dean of the School of Art, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, contributed his artistic and humanistic wares as the chief designer of the sculptured layout; including the magnificent fountains that flow from granite stones into the at-once river and pond waterways. The team from Zen Associates, led by principle Shinichiro Abe, hand-selected every piece of the garden, and designed the vegetation landscaping throughout (as well as continuing the natural flow around the cancer treatment center). The collaboration of Wendel and Shin (both soulful geniuses) culminated in the first of what we hope to be an evergrowing number of therapeutic sites for patients.

Annual Benefit Concerts led the way as a fundraising vehicle. Events to date, including MusicFest 2001, MusicFest 2000, and MusicFest'99, featuring lineups of Canadian and U.S. virtuosos, have combined with individual, organizational, and corporate donations to raise over $ 75,000 for the "Mary Eagan Garden Fund" at Waltham Hospital (tax deductible in the U.S.). Exceptional musicians have been enthusiastic in response to the concert series. In particular, Peterborough, Ontario, Canada's Rick Fines continually provides inspiration, support, and advice; as well as tremendous entertainment!

A number of accomplished performers donated songs from their recordings for the "Family, Friends, and Neighbors" compilation CD. 100% of the proceeds from the album sales went directly to the Garden Fund.

Musicians, contractors, benefactors, and all others who would like to become involved in seeing the creation of future garden patio projects are invited to contact Terry Eagan via phone at 781-894-0706 or email at terryeagan@patiorecords.com
